Paank, a human rights organisation, has released its January 2025 report, exposing widespread human rights violations in Balochistan, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and acts of state repression by Pakistani forces. The report provides a grim overview of the escalating crisis, highlighting a systematic campaign of abductions, unlawful detentions, and targeted executions.
Wave of Enforced Disappearances Across Balochistan
The report documents 107 cases of enforced disappearances across 14 districts of Balochistan, with Kech district recording the highest number of abductions (30 cases). Several incidents were also reported in Awaran, Gwadar, Khuzdar, and Dera Bugti, with two cases recorded in Sindh, reflecting the wider reach of state repression.
While 42 individuals were later released, many had endured severe physical and psychological torture, exposing the inhumane treatment of detainees.
Extrajudicial Killings: A Disturbing Pattern of State Violence
Paank’s report confirms eight cases of extrajudicial killings in January 2025, underscoring the deadly tactics employed by Pakistani forces:
- Zakria Zaheer s/o Allah Bakhsh, a former victim of enforced disappearance, was abducted on 27 September 2024 and later released. He was extrajudicially killed on 11 January 2025, near Oasis School in Gwadar, by Pakistani secret agencies.
- Inayat Ullah Baloch, a student, was shot dead on 1 January 2025 in Turbat, Kech district.
- Jehanzaib Baloch succumbed to fatal internal injuries after being run over by a vehicle during a peaceful protest in Hoshap, Kech district.
- Itefaq Ahmed (Afzal Manzoor), who had been forcibly disappeared on 10 December 2024, was killed in a staged explosion in the Jusak area of Turbat on 13 January 2025.
- Muhammad s/o Rozi, a resident of Mand, Kech district, was executed in front of his family by a state-backed death squad on 14 January 2025.
- Jalal Ahmed s/o Rafiq, from Turbat, Kech district, was targeted and killed by a state-backed death squad on 4 January 2025.
- Waheed Baloch s/o Abdul Wahid, from Kallag, Panjgur district, was fatally shot by Pakistani forces while transporting cattle in Mashkil, Chaghi district, on 25 January 2025.
- Pindok s/o Soomar, from Mashkai, Awaran district, was forcibly disappeared on 14 January 2025. He was tortured in custody and later killed, with his body handed over to his family on 26 January 2025.
Call for International Intervention
Paank’s latest report presents compelling evidence of the systematic repression in Balochistan, where enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and brutal torture remain widespread.
The international community, human rights organisations, and global institutions are urged to take immediate action to hold Pakistan accountable and demand justice for the victims.
