The British Invasion of Balochistan- 13 November 1839

The British Invasion of Balochistan – 1839

On 13 November 1839, British troops led by General Willshire attacked and seized control of the capital of Balochistan, the Khanate of Kalat. The Khan of the Baloch, Mir Mehrab Khan II, valiantly resisted the invasion but tragically embraced martyrdom in the battle. This marked the beginning of a series of British policies that sought to undermine Balochistan’s autonomy. The British divided Baloch territory through various boundary commissions, severely disrupting the traditional way of life of the Baloch people and further entrenching colonial rule in the region.

The Balochistan Independence – 11 August 1947

Balochistan declared its independence on 11 August 1947, three days before Pakistan’s creation on 14 August. The State of Kalat, representing Balochistan, was recognised as an independent entity. However, on 27 March 1948, Pakistan forcibly annexed Balochistan, leading to ongoing resistance and human rights violations.

Balochistan’s Occupation by Pakistan – 1948

On 27 March 1948, Balochistan’s brief period of independence came to a sudden end when Pakistan invaded and took control of the region. The peaceful way of life in Balochistan was violently disrupted, and this marked the start of a long and ongoing struggle for sovereignty. Since that Black Day, the Baloch people have consistently resisted Pakistani rule, facing countless military operations, violence, and severe human rights abuses. Yet, they continue to stand strong in their fight for freedom and justice.

Baloch Genocide Remembrance Day

Since 27 March 1948, when Balochistan was forcibly occupied by Pakistan, the Baloch people have endured systematic oppression and grave human rights violations. Enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and the discovery of mass graves have become a harsh reality in the region. This section sheds light on their resilience and unwavering fight for justice, freedom, and self-determination against decades of injustice.

What is Balochistan's history of occupation?

Balochistan has been under occupation by both Pakistan and Iran. Pakistan annexed Balochistan on 27 March 1948, ending its brief period of independence. Iran controls the region known as Sistan and Baluchestan, where Baloch people also face repression. Both countries have systematically denied the Baloch people their right to self-determination, subjecting them to human rights abuses.

What human rights violations occur in Balochistan?

In both Pakistani and Iranian-controlled Balochistan, the Baloch people face enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, torture, extrajudicial killings, and restrictions on their cultural and political expression. These violations are part of a broader effort to suppress Baloch autonomy and erase their identity.

How can I support the Baloch Rights?

Support can be shown by:

  • Contacting MPs to demand action on human rights violations.
  • Attending rallies and protests organised by Baloch communities.
  • Raising awareness about the situation in Balochistan through social media and other platforms.

Advocacy is crucial to ensure that the Baloch people are not denied their right to self-determination and cultural identity.
