At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured in a suicide bombing at a political rally in Quetta, Balochistan, on 2 September, authorities and local officials said. The Islamic State militant group (ISIS) later claimed responsibility for the attack.
The rally, organised by the Balochistan National Party (BNP), was held to commemorate the anniversary of the death of nationalist leader Sardar Ataullah Mengal. His son, BNP chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal, was in attendance and is reported to be safe. The blast reportedly occurred in the stadium parking area as attendees were leaving the rally.
Government official Hamza Shafqat confirmed the death toll, while police officer Athar Rasheed described the blast as a suspected suicide bombing.
In response to the attack, political parties in Balochistan announced a province-wide wheel-jam and shutter-down strike on 8 September. Leaders from multiple parties, including BNP, Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Ayeen Pakistan, National Party, Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and Majlis Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen, condemned the bombing and called for public participation in the strike.

ANP provincial president Asghar Khan Achakzai paid tribute to the martyrs and criticised the provincial government for failing to ensure security. “Bloodshed is spreading unchecked across the province,” he said, calling for accountability and protection for civilians. Mahmood Khan Achakzai of Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Ayeen Pakistan described the bombing as “the murder of humanity.”
Baloch activists and human rights groups have accused Pakistan’s security agencies of involvement, describing the attack as part of a broader campaign of violence against the Baloch population. These allegations have not been addressed by authorities.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest and most resource-rich province, is also the country’s poorest and regularly ranks among the lowest on human development indicators. The province has long been a site of insurgency, militant attacks, and political unrest.
