February 20, 2026 โ Surab, Balochistan: On February 9, 2026, at approximately 5:00 PM, Murtaza, son of Yahya, a 31-year-old farmer from Marap, Surab, was taken by Frontier Corps at Mall FC Chowki on the Main RCD Road, Surab. He was forcibly disappeared without any judicial order, without being informed of any charge against him, and without being produced before any court or legal authority. From that moment, his family received no information regarding his location or his condition. He entered a state of total incommunicado detention invisible to the law, inaccessible to his family, and unaccounted for by any official institution.
Before the recovery of his body, the Baloch Yakjehti Committee formally submitted Murtaza’s case to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, while Murtaza remained missing, urging the Working Group to formally communicate with the Government of Pakistan and press for the immediate disclosure of his fate and whereabouts.
On February 20, 2026, eleven days after he was taken, Murtaza’s body was recovered. His body bore visible marks of severe physical abuse, consistent with the treatment documented in numerous other cases of enforced disappearance in Balochistan, where victims are returned bearing the evidence of what was done to them in custody. His death following enforced disappearance and physical torture constitutes a grave violation of the right to life, the prohibition against torture, and the absolute prohibition against enforced disappearance under international human rights law.
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee holds the concerned state institutions fully accountable for the fate of Murtaza and calls upon the United Nations and the international community to urgently take cognisance of this case and demand a full, independent, and transparent investigation. BYC will pursue every available legal and advocacy channel until accountability is secured.
Justice for Murtaza is not a matter of political discretion; it is an obligation under international law. BYC will pursue every available legal and advocacy channel until accountability is secured, and will continue to document each case with the same resolve, for as long as enforced disappearances remain a weapon wielded against the people of Balochistan.
