London — 24 May 2025, Aomar Karim, a UK-based advocate for Baloch human rights, has strongly condemned the Pakistani military’s public accusation against Dr Mahrang Baloch, a prominent human rights defender, labelling her a terrorist.
In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Karim criticised the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) for what he described as a “deliberate attempt to malign a peaceful activist.” He wrote:
“I strongly condemn @OfficialDGISPR for accusing Dr @MahrangBaloch_, a peaceful human rights activist, of being a terrorist. The world knows extremist religious groups are proxies of the Pakistan Army — funded and protected by it. #Balochistan #HumanRights #DGISPR”
Dr Mahrang Baloch, known for her vocal advocacy against enforced disappearances and military operations in Balochistan, was arrested by Balochistan police on 22 March 2025 during a peaceful protest against human rights violations allegedly committed by Pakistan’s security forces. She has since been detained at Hudda District Prison in Quetta, Balochistan.
Human rights organisations have condemned her arrest as arbitrary and politically motivated, calling for her immediate release. Activists and observers widely regard Dr Baloch as a symbol of non-violent resistance in a region long plagued by conflict and state repression.
Karim added that accusing a well-known activist of terrorism is not only defamatory but also indicative of the state’s wider campaign to silence dissent in Balochistan.
International human rights bodies have yet to comment officially on the Pakistani military’s allegations, but growing calls are emerging for urgent intervention and monitoring by the United Nations and other international watchdogs.
