London, 15 March – Marking the International Day of Action for Rivers, the World Sindhi Congress (WSC) staged a large-scale protest outside the Pakistan High Commission in London against the construction of six new canals on the Indus River. The demonstrators condemned the move as unconstitutional, accusing the federal and Punjab governments of Pakistan of attempting to divert Sindh’s water resources. The protest was attended by nationalist leaders, human rights activists, intellectuals, and political workers.
Among the key speakers and participants were Dr Lakhu Lohana, Dr Hidayat Bhutto, Aomar Karim (Baloch Human Rights and Political activist) Dr.Khursheed Karim ( Baloch Human Rights Council ) Aimen Zounr (student leader), Abdul Razzaq Buriro (Sindh United Party UK representative), Sohail Abro (Jeay Sindh Freedom Movement), Kamran Jatoi (lawyer), Fahmida Khushik, Dr Khadija Mahar, Habibullah Baloch (Baloch National Movement), Abdul Rauf Leghari, Hafeezan Wadhio, Fahmida Baloch, and others. The speakers strongly condemned what they described as conspiracies against the Indus River and led chants against the federal and Punjab governments.

We Will Fight to the Last Breath Against the Plundering of Sindh’s Resources
WSC leaders stated that the Punjab government is not only constructing new canals on the Indus River but is also preparing to seize Sindh’s agricultural lands under the guise of “Green Corporate Farming.” They made it clear that any unlawful occupation of Sindh’s resources would not be tolerated.

Punjab’s Water Theft is Drying Up Sindh
The protestors warned that the construction of additional canals on the Indus River would trigger severe droughts and famines in Sindh, leading to mass displacement and starvation. They cautioned that the escalating water crisis could inflame inter-provincial tensions, posing a serious threat to national stability.
Destruction of the Indus River Puts Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin at Great Risk
The leaders highlighted the environmental devastation caused by restricting the Indus River’s flow, warning that the Indus Delta, already facing seawater intrusion, would be further imperilled. If the construction of the six canals proceeds, Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, and the entire coastal belt of Sindh could suffer catastrophic consequences.

People’s Party is Collaborating with the Establishment in This Conspiracy
WSC accused the Sindh government, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and President Asif Ali Zardari of colluding with the military establishment to facilitate the canal projects. They alleged that “President Zardari himself approved these canals, and now, as public outrage in Sindh mounts, the PPP is feigning opposition.”
Criticising the PPP’s stance, the leaders issued a challenge:
If the PPP genuinely opposes these canals, it must resign from the presidency, provincial governments, and the Senate, sever its alliance with PML-N in the federal government, and stand with the people of Sindh in protest.
The Struggle Will Continue Until the Complete Protection of the Indus River
WSC’s campaign is gaining global traction, with protests held simultaneously in Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago (USA), as well as in Toronto (Canada), demanding immediate action to safeguard the Indus River.
During the demonstration, WSC condemned police brutality and the arrests of protesters in Sindh. They also paid tribute to the sacrifices of journalists, lawyers, students, and nationalist activists who have fought for Sindh’s rights.
WSC made it clear that this movement will not be confined to protests alone; it will persist across all platforms to ensure the complete protection of the Indus River.
