Balochistan – The Baloch Women Forum has strongly condemned the alleged disruption of an event marking International Women’s Day in Dera Ghazi Khan, accusing state authorities of attempting to silence the voices of Baloch women.
In an official statement, a spokesperson for the forum emphasised the importance of International Women’s Day as a platform to recognise women’s rights, acknowledge their struggles, and celebrate their contributions to society. The day also serves to raise awareness on gender equality and the challenges women continue to face globally.
The spokesperson claimed that state interference in the event was indicative of the authorities‘ intolerance towards independent civic activities, particularly those advocating for women’s rights in Balochistan. The forum described the intervention as a direct violation of democratic principles and freedom of expression, underscoring that every citizen has the fundamental right to voice their concerns and demand their rights without fear of suppression.
The statement further pointed to the state’s apparent discomfort with the increasing activism of Baloch women, noting their growing influence in both local and national discourse. The forum expressed concerns that the actions taken against the event reflect a broader effort to stifle the momentum of this activism.
Additionally, the Baloch Women Forum condemned reports of threats being directed at local women activists by authorities and reaffirmed its commitment to the continued struggle for women’s rights. Despite facing intimidation, the forum vowed to persist in advocating for gender equality and the empowerment of Baloch women.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for greater protection of women’s rights and the preservation of civil liberties in Pakistan, particularly for the Baloch community, which has long faced challenges in exercising its freedoms.
